The
Patient Organization (P.O.) is the heart of CSAM. It is a creative and
participatory initiative, which began in January 1998 with
thirty-seven families interested in addressing health care issues
while also wanting to foster a sense of community. We chose the
anthroposophical therapeutic approach and an annual membership
structure in which families commit to paying a reasonable monthly fee.
In return for this fee, the patient is entitled to all forms of
treatment available from the practice. Services needed that are not
offered by the practice are covered by other insurance or paid for
privately. Many of the patients who go to the CSAM practice are
members of the P.O., thus the practice can be run somewhat independent of
conventional health insurance and health maintenance organizations. As
a group, we determine which services we want and contract with CSAM on
a monthly basis for these services. In this way we each contribute to
the health of the community we are a part of and in turn the community
supports each of us. The social aspect, whether it is gathering for a
continuing education opportunity or to share a potluck meal, is a
valuable support as well. This is a broader and more inclusive
approach to wellness and medicine than is seen in many managed health care
systems existing today. There is freedom and benefit for everyone
involved, which is an essential element of Anthroposophy.
